Pharmacokinetics
It has good tissue penetration. Exerts more sustained action at the site of infection .It is excreted unchanged in urine, but dose need to be reduced only if creatinine clearance is less than 50 ml/min.
Indications
Cefadroxil is used in infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract,skin and soft tissues .Cefadroxil acts mainly against Gram positive organisms including pneumococci, Streptococcus Viridians, Staphylococcus Aureus and some gram negative organisms including E.coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirablis.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
For bacterial infections: For oral dosage form (capsules, tablets, or oral suspension) in Adults : 500 milligrams (mg) to 1 gm every twelve hours, In Children : 15 mg per kilogram (kg) of body weight every twelve hours.
Contra Indications
Cefadroxil is contraindicated in pseudomembranous colitis,hypersensitivity to cephalsporins, pregnancy and lactation,
Precautions
Precaution to be taken are during renal disease when the dose has to be reduced. In Gastric and intestinal disease (especially colitis, including colitis caused by antibiotics, or enteritis) - Cephalosporins may aggravate the existing condition.
Interactions
Probenecid increases the blood levels of many cephalosporins. Concurrent use of furosemide increases the renal toxicity.Cefadroxil potentiates nephro toxicity of aminoglycosides.
