Pharmacokinetics
Buprenorphine can be given orally, IM, and sublingually. 50 % of the drug is bio-available after sublingual administration. It is highly protein bound and remains in the tissues for several days.It is mainly excreted in the faeces and in smaller amounts in the urine.
Indications
Buprenorphine is indicated in moderate to severe pain in surgery, trauma, burns, fractures and cancer.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
For injection dose : For pain in Adults: 0.3 milligrams (mg), injected IM or slow I.V .Can be repeated every six hours as required upto a maximum dose of 1.8mg.
Contra Indications
Buprenorphine is contraindicated in severe respiratory disease and in pregnancy.
Precautions
Special precaution to be taken in hepatic disease,renal disease and lactation.
Interactions
May precipitate withdrawal symptoms in narcotic addicts. When given along with diazepam may produce respiratory and cardiac collapse.
