Pharmacokinetics
The drug is an azalide antibiotic. It is more active against gram-negative organisms. It is aborbed from the GIT after oral administration. The blood concentration is low, while the anti-microbial activity is high. It is concentrated in leukocytes and penetrates the tissues well and has a long half life.
Indications
Azithromycin is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. It can be used to treat Streptococcal infections of the throat, Chlamydial infections, M.pneumoniae, C.jejuni, H.Influenzae, bronchitis, skin infections etc.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Oral dose (capsules): For bronchitis, streptococcal infections of throat, pneumonia, and skin infections: Adults and children 16 years of age and older : 500 milligrams (mg) on the first day, then 250 mg once a day on the second through fifth days. For chlamydia infections:Adults and children 16 years of age and older :1000 mg taken once as a single dose.
Contra Indications
Contraindicated in hepatic and renal dysfunction, Pregnancy.
Precautions
Hepatic disease : Patients with severe hepatic disease may have an increased risk of adverse effects.
Interactions
Antacids, aluminium and magnesium-containing: Antacids may decrease the amount of azithromycin in the blood, which may decrease its potency. Azithromycin should be taken at least 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after antacids.
