Pharmacokinetics
It is a selective Beta-2 adrenoreceptor agonist. It is a potent bronchodilator. It can be given both orally as well as parentrally. It is not a substrate for COMT, hence it has a long duration of action of about 4-8 hours.
Indications
They are taken by oral inhalation and parentrally for relief of bronchospasm in asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Inhalation aerosol dosage in Adults : 80 to 240 mg t.i.d or 13 mg /kg /day in divided doses upto a max of 900mg / day.In children 1 to 9 yrs 24 mg / kg/day in divided doses. Parentral dose for acute asthmatic attacks and narrowing of airways:Aminophyl
Contra Indications
The drug is contraindicated in persons with hypersensitivity to xanthine derivatives, in neonates and during lactation.
Precautions
Precautions to be taken in patients with Brain damage, Convulsions, Diabetes mellitus, Cardiac disease,Hypertension, Hepatic dysfunction, Hyperthyroidism, Peptic ulcer,Pregnancy and Pulmonary oedema.
Interactions
Beta-blockers : These drugs reduce the effect of the adrenergic bronchodilators. Cocaine, Ergoloid mesylates, Ergotamine, Maprotiline, Tricyclic antidepressants : The effects of these drugs on the heart and blood vessels may be potentiated. Digitalis glycosides : The chance of Cardiac arrhythmias may be increased. Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors : Using adrenergic bronchodilators when using or within 2 weeks of taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors may increase the effects of MAO inhibitors
