Thrombolytic/Plasminogen Activator
|
Pharmacokinetics
It combines with the pro-activator of plasminogen and catalyzes the conversion of inactive plasminogen to activates plasmin.
Indications
Thrombolytic agents are used to dissolve thrombii that have formed in certain blood vessels. These drugs are usually used when a thrombus seriously lessens the flow of blood to certain parts of the body. Thrombolytic agents are also used to dissolve thrombii that form in catheters and tubes that are placed into the body. The tubes allow treatments such as dialysis or injections into a vein to be given over a long period of time.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Adults: By IV infusion of a loading dose of 250,000 units, followed by 100,000 units/hr for 24 to 48 hrs.
Contra Indications
Contraindicated in Hypersensitivity, bleeding diathesis, trauma.
Precautions
Allergies: Allergic reaction to streptokinase may occur. Pregnancy :There is a slight chance that use of a thrombolytic agent during the first five months of pregnancy may cause a miscarriage. Older adults: The need for treatment with a thrombolytic agent may be increased in elderly patients with blood clots, however, the chance of bleeding may also be increased.
Interactions
Aspirin, Cefamandole, Divalproex, Enoxaparin, Heparin, Indomethacin, anti-inflammatory drugs or analgesics (except narcotics), Phenylbutazone, Plicamycin, Sulfinpyrazone, Ticlopidine or Valproic acid: when used together with Streptokinase increases the chances of bleeding .
