Salbutamol is chemically related to isoprenaline. It is not metabolised by COMT and MAO, therefore the action of the drug lasts longer than isoprenaline. It acts by stimulating the Beta-2 receptor cells of the smooth muscles in the bronchioles and uterus. It has minimal cardiac stimulant effect and does not cause hypertension.

It is used for relief of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease and relaxation of uterine smooth muscle to delay threatened abortion.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

For relief of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, metered dose inhalation in adults: 100 to 200 mcg aerosol three or four times a day OR Rotacaps dry powder three or four times a day. Oral dose for adults : 2 to 4 mg t.d.

Contra Indications

It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug and thyrotoxicosis.

Precautions

Precautions must be taken when taking the drug during pregnancy, lactation and in the elderly.

Interactions

It may interact with sympathomimetic bronchodilators. Use with Diuretics and Xanthines may augument hypokalemia.
