Pharmacokinetics
Oxazepam is slowly absorbed from the gut, and the CNS penetration is also slow. It's plasma half life is about 10 hours. It has no active metabolites-the duraton of action is relatively shorter. The hepatic metabolism is not significant, hence prefered in elderly and in those with hepatic disease.
Indications
Oxazepam is used to relieve the anxiety, tention, agitation, and irritability in the elderly and in those with hepatic disease.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Oral dose:30-60 mgs in 2-3 divided doses.
Contra Indications
Oxazepam is cotraindicated in children under 6 years, hypersensitivity, acute pulmonary insufficiency, and in psychosis.
Precautions
Precaution has to be taken in myasthenia gravis, acute narrow angle gaucoma, and in pregnancy & lactation.
Interactions
Oxazepam potentiates the CNS depression produced by other drugs[alcohol, babiturates, MAO inhibitors].
