Pharmacokinetics
It is completely absorbed and is distributed throughout the body, it has elimination half life of 11hrs, and is excreted in the urine.
Indications
Fluoroquinolones are used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. They are both bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic. It is effective against both gram positve and gram negative organisms including : Pseudomonas, gonoccoci, H.influenzae, staphylococci, streptococci etc. It is not active aginst anaerobes. It is not effective for Rhinitis, Influenza, or other viral infections.They are mainly used for GIT infections.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Oral dose form (tablets): Adults: 400 mg every twelve hours for three to twenty-one days, depending on the medical problem being treated. Gonorrhoea is usually treated with a single, oral dose of 800 mg. Children up to 18 years of age: This drug is not recommended in infants and children.
Contra Indications
Contraindicated in children below 12 yrs,convulsion, pregnancy, lactation and in hypersensitivity.
Precautions
With Brain or spinal cord disease, including arterisclerosis in the brain or epilepsy or other seizures : Fluoroquinolones may cause neurological symptoms, renal impairment and hepatic disease: Patients with renal disease (alone) or renal disease and hepatic disease (together) may have an increased chance of side effects.
Interactions
With : Aminophylline, Oxtriphylline, Theophylline: Norfloxacin may increase the chance of adverse effects of these drugs. Antacids, Iron supplements or Sucralfate : These may keep any of the fluoroquinolones from being effective. Caffeine : norfloxacin may increase the chance of adverse effects of caffeine. Didanosine : Didanosine may reduce the effectiveness of the fluoroquinolones. Warfarin : norfloxacin may potentiate the effect of warfarin, increasing the chance of bleeding diathesis.
