Pharmacokinetics
Naproxen, when given orally is highly plasma protein bound. It gets metabolised in the liver. It has a t1/2 of 12-16 hrs.About 10% gets excreted in the urine. Naproxen enters the brain, synovial fluid and can cross the placenta.
Indications
Naproxen is indicated in painful inflammatory conditions associated with the musculoskeletal system, dysmenorrhoea and also during post operative and post traumatic period. It is also given in chronic inflammatory condition like Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Oral: 250 mgs twice daily.
Contra Indications
Naproxen is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity, active peptic ulcer, moderate to severe hepatic disease and infants.
Precautions
Precaution has to be taken in cardiac failure, edema, hypertention, elderly and in lactating women.
Interactions
When Naproxen is used with lithium, Phenytoin, anticoagulants and Methotrexate it will increase their toxicity. It antagonises the effects of diuretics like Frusemide and Thiazides.
