It is a snythetic PGE1 analogue. It is given orally and exerts a cytoprotective effect and
also inhibits gastric acid secretion from the parietal cells. It exerts its effect on gastric
secretion over a period of few hours.
Indications
Misoprostol is a drug that is used to prevent peptic ulcers and also recommended for prophylaxis of NSAID induced ulcers.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Oral dose in Adults = 200 micrograms (mcg) four times a day or 400 mcg two times day
Contra Indications
It may be contraindicated in Epilepsy : Drugs like misoprostol have been shown to cause seizures. It is contraindicated in pregnancy.
Precautions
Precautions: During Lactation .Misoprostol is not recommended for use during breast-feeding because it may cause diarrhea in nursing babies.
Allergies : may occur with the drug.
Interactions
It may rarely interact with other drugs.
