Pharmacokinetics
It is orally given for long term therapy of hypertension. It is well absorbed from the GIT after oral adminstration. The drug is acetylated in the liver.
Indications
Hydralazine belongs to the class of drugs called antihypertensives. Hydralazine acts by dilating the blood vessels and increasing the myocardial oxygen supply while reducing cardiac work load.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
For oral dose (tablets): For hypertension: Adults : 10 to 50 milligrams (mg) four times a day. Children : The usual dose is 0.75 to 7.5 mg per kilogram (kg) of body weight a day, divided into four doses. For injection dosage form: For hypertension: Adults : 5 to 40 mg injected into a muscle or a vein. Children : Dose is based on body weight - 1.7 to 3.5 mg per kg of body weight a day. This is divided into four to six doses and injected into IM or IV. For hypertension during pregnancy : Adults: 5 mg injected IV every fifteen to thirty minutes.
Contra Indications
Contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions
Pregnancy : Hydralazine has not been extensively studied in pregnant women. However, blood dyscrasias have been reported in infants of mothers who took hydralazine during pregnancy.
Interactions
With Diazoxide: Effect on blood pressure may be increased.
