Pharmacokinetics
Clarithromycin is absorbed from small intestine, the drug gets partially destroyed by the gastric juice so it must be administered in enteric coated form. It is mainly concentrated in the bile.
Indications
Clarithromycin is used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body.It is effective against both Gram Positive and some Gram Negative organisms, Mycoplama and Chlamydiae. It is both bactericidal and bacteriostatic . It is also used to treat Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
Oral dosage (suspension and tablets): For bacterial infections: Adults and teenagers : 250 to 500 milligrams (mg) every twelve hours for seven to fourteen days.Children 6 months of age and older :7.5 mg per kilogram (kg) of body weight every twelve hours for seven to ten days. For treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC):Adults and teenagers: 500 mg every twelve hours.Children 6 months of age and older : 7.5 mg per kg of body weight, up to 500 mg, every twelve hours.
Contra Indications
Main contraindications are hypersensitivity and use with drugs like terfenidine and astemizole.
Precautions
Patients with severe renal disease may have an increased risk of adverse effects.
Interactions
With Carbamazepine,Digoxin, Terfenadine, Theophylline,Warfarin : Clarithromycin may increase the incidence of adverse effects of these drugs. With Rifabutin, Rifampin : Rifabutin or rifampin may decrease the amount of clarithromycin in the blood.With Zidovudine : Clarithromycin may decrease the amount of zidovudine in the blood
