Pharmacokinetics
Cefazolin is administered parentrally .It reaches high concentrations in plasma and bile.Cefazolin has a longer half life( 2 hrs )hence used in surgical prophylaxis.80 % is protein bound. 90 % is excreted in the urine.
Indications
Cefazolin is used in the treatment of infections caused by E.coli, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus Aureus, H.influenza.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
250 milligrams eighth hourly in milder cases or 1 gm sixth hourly in severe cases I.M or I.V .
Contra Indications
Cefazolin is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity and during concurrent administration of diuretics.
Precautions
Precautions are to be taken in Renal disease .
Interactions
Probenecid increases the blood level of Cefazolin. Concurrent use of diuretic with Cefazolin may increase the nephrotoxicity.
