The Causes of Renal Failure:

Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney disease.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder caused by the insufficient insulin secretion or inefficient usage of the insulin secreted by the body. Read about causes, symptoms and management of Diabetes.

People who have diabetes for many years are susceptible to kidney disease or Diabetic Nephropathy.

Hypertension is second only to diabetes as the leading cause of kidney failure. In the US, 15%-20% of kidney failure cases are due to hypertension.

Hypertension or high blood pressure is defined as a blood pressure reading of greater than 140/90* in adults over 18 years of age. It is estimated that hypertension affects 20% of the adult population in most countries.

*Measured in mm Hg (millimetres of mercury)

Other Causes include:

Chronic Glomerulonephritis

This condition is, fortunately, not very common. The slow but progressive damage of a kidney part called the glomeruli resulting in Chronic Glomerulonephritis is usually attributed to impairment in the immune system.

Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a hereditary condition, can lead to kidney failure. When someone has this disease, cysts grow and damage the kidneys. Then the kidneys enlarge, and eventually they stop working.

  • Kidney infections
  • Lupus
  • Kidney Stones
  • Some congenital defects like pylonephritis
