Alprazolam

Pharmacokinetics

It is absorbed from the proximal small intestine. It is extensively distributed in the body. It is transformed to clinically active metabolites. It has a moderately long 1/2 life and may persist in the body.

Indications

Alprazolam is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and mild depression.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

For treatment of anxiety disorders ; Oral dose : Adults = initially, 0.25 to 1 milligrams (mg) three times a day. The maximum dose is not more than 4 mg a day. For treatment of panic disorders ; start with 0.5 mgs tds and increase by 1 mg/day at intervals of 3 to 4 days.The usual dose is 4 to 6 mgs/day. For treatment of depression ; 0.5 mgs tds upto 4 mgs /day.

Contra Indications

Contraindicated in Glaucoma, Myasthenia gravis, Porphyria and Sleep apnea .

Precautions

Withdrawal of drug should be gradual.Special precautions should be taken in geriatric or debiliated patients, epilepsy,impaired hepatic and renal function.

Interactions

Combination of alprazolam with alcohol and barbiturates can be potentially dangerous .They produce synergistic CNS depression.
