Pharmacokinetics

Doxycycline is a high plasma protein binding drug .It has a longer half life after oral administration. It's plasma level is not altered by renal disease hence can be used in the presence of a renal impairment.It is primarily excreted in faeces as conjugate.Half life is 18 to 24 hrs.

Indications

Doxycycline is a semisynthetic tetracycline. It is bacteriostatic in action, acts against Chlamydia trachomatis, mycoplasma, vibrio cholerae, brucella, yersinia pestis, borrelia recurrentis and rickettsial infections. It also acts against Plasmodia.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

Oral ; 200 mgs initially, then 100 to 200 mgs O.D.

Contra Indications

Contraindicated in children under 12 yrs of age, SLE, pregnancy, lactation, and in patients with hypersensitivity to teracyclines.

Precautions

Patients with hepatic disease may have an increased chance of adverse effects if they use Doxycycline.

Interactions

Reduced absorption is seen with Antacids, Calcium supplements, magnesium salicylates .Oral contraceptives containing estrogen: it may decrease the effect of contraception and increase the chance of unwanted pregnancy.
