Pharmacokinetics It is completely absorbed when given orally, 70% is excreted by kidney and the rest by the liver. Indications Disopyramide is used to treat ventricular tachyarrythmias and some types of supraventricular arrythmias. Routes of Administration and Dosage For treatment of arrhythmias: For short-acting oral dosage forms (capsules): Adults : 300 milligrams (mg) initially. Then 100 to 150 mg taken every six to eight hours. Children: The dose is usually 6 to 30 mg per kilogram (kg) of body weight per day. This dose is evenly divided and taken every six hours. For long-acting oral dosage forms (extended-release capsules or tablets): Adults: 200 or 300 mg every twelve hours. For injection dosage form: Adults: initially dose is based on body weight . It is usually 2 mg per kg of body weight injected in three divided doses, or, 2 mg per kg of body weight infused over fifteen minutes. Dose following first few doses: It is usually 0.4 mg per kg of body weight per hour given for up to twenty-four hours. Contra Indications Contraindicated in children, AV block, Sick sinus syndrome, Cardiogenic shock, LVF and in Cardiomyopathy. Precautions In Diabetes mellitus : Disopyramide may cause hypoglycaemia. In patients with enlarged prostate : Disopyramide may worsen the symptoms. Glaucoma or Myasthenia gravis : Disopyramide may make these conditions worse. Renal disease or hepatic disease: Effects may be potentiated because of slower removal of Disopyramide from the body. Interactions With Pimozide: Risk of Cardiact arrhythmias may be increased.
