Pharmacokinetics

Diloxanide furoate when given orally is split in the gut into diloxanide and furoic acid; the diloxanide is largely absorbed from the gut and furoic acid is esterified in the intestine. Diloxanide is glucuronidated in the liver and reaches a high level in 1hr in the plasma. The drug is excreted in the urine.

Indications

The drug is used in intestinal amoebiasis and is given after any tissue amoebicide to eradicate cysts.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

Oral dose (tablets): For amoebiasis in Adults and children 12 years of age and older: Oral, 500 milligrams (mg) three times a day for ten days, in Children up to 12 years of age: Dose is based on body weight. The usual dose is 20 mg per kilogram (kg) of

Contra Indications

It is contraindicated in children below 2yrs of age.

Precautions

Precautions to be taken in pregnancy and during lactation.Flatulence, nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, pruritis and urticaria are its adverse effects.
