Pharmacokinetics When cycloserine is given orally it is absorbed rapidly and reaches a high plasma level in 4 hrs. 50% of the drug gets excreted through the kidneys in unchanged form in 12 hrs. It achieves a good level in the CSF. It is excreted in the urine in bactericidal concentrations,in individuals with normal renal function. Indications Cycloserine is an antibiotic used as part of the multiple drug treatment of tuberculosis. Cycloserine may also be used for infections caused by gram positive bacteria, E.coli and chlamydia. Routes of Administration and Dosage Oral dose (capsules): For treatment of tuberculosis in Adults : 250 milligrams (mg) two times a day to start with. The drug can be increased upto 250 mg,three or four times a day.For treatment of tuberculosis in children: Doses of 10 to 20 mg per kilogram of body weight per day should be used. Contra Indications Cyloserine is contraindicated in severe renal impairment, porphyria,epilepsy,depression,psychotic reactions and hypersensitivity. Precautions In Alcohol abuse and Convulsive disorders: Cycloserine may increase the risk of seizures in these patients. Interactions Ethionamide may increase the risk of adverse neurological effects, especially seizures in patients using Cycloserine. Brand Names Coxerin(Macleods), Cyclorine(Lupin), Cyserine(VHB).
