Pharmacokinetics

Ceftazidime is given only parenterally and it penetrates tissues well. Renal tubular blocking with probenicid is reduced in renal insufficiency. Its concentration in the bile is similar to that of plasma. Its excretion is reduced in renal impairment. It is metabolised in the liver and gets excreted via the kidneys.

Indications

Ceftazidime is a third generation cephalasporin that is used in the treatment of infections caused by mainly Gram Negative organisms like Enterobacter, Klebsiella and Proteus.It is highly active against pseudomonas aeuruginosa.

Routes of Administration and Dosage

For adults : 0.5 to 2 gms I.M or I.V every 8 hrs . For children 30 mgs /kg/day .

Contra Indications

Ceftazidime is contraindicated in infants less than one month of age,renal disease, pregnancy, lactation and hypersensitivity .

Precautions

Precautions to be taken in acutely ill elderly patients.

Interactions

Ceftazidime gives false positive Coombs test and false positive test for urine sugar.
