Pharmacokinetics
Lincomycin is given orally and intramuscularly. The drug is well distributed throughout the body and is mainly concentrated in the liver, spleen, kidney and lungs.Plasma half life is 5 hrs.
Indications
Lincomycin acts against Gram positive cocci and is bactericidal.It acts specially on anerobes like Bacteroides fragilis and penicillin resistant Staphylococci.
Routes of Administration and Dosage
For infections caused by bacteria: Oral dose (capsules) in Adults : 500 milligrams (mg) every six to eight hours.In infants and children : Dose is based on body weight - 7.5 to 15 mg per kilogram (kg) of body weight every six hours; or 10 to 20 mg per kg of body weight every eight hours. For injection dosage form in Adults : 600 mg to 1 gram injected IV at least one hour, every six to twelve hours; or 600 mg injected IM every twenty-four hours. In Children and infants dose is based on body weight - 10 mg per kg of body weight injected IM every twelve to twenty-four hours; or 5 to 10 mg per kg of body weight injected IV every twelve hours.
Contra Indications
Lincomycin is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, neonates and in meningitis.
Precautions
Severe Renal and Hepatic disease may increase serum levels of this drug, increasing the chance of adverse effects. Patients with Gastric and intestinal disease like colitis ( including colitis caused by antibiotics, or enteritis) may have an increased risk of adverse effects.
Interactions
Taking Chloramphenicol, Antidiarrhoeals may decrease the effects of lincomycin.Erythromycin along with lincomycin has synergistic effect .Antidiarrhoeals such as loperamide when taken with Lincomycin may worsen diarrhoea which is an adverse effect of lincomycin.
