YRG Centre for AIDS Research and Education


YRG Centre for AIDS Research and Education is an autonomous unit of the Y.R. Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation, a registered charitable trust. It was founded by Dr. Suniti Solomon in 1993.

The activities of YRG Centre for AIDS Research and Education includes:

  • Adolescent Sexual Health Project
  • Continuum of Care: Integrated Care Model
  • Documentation and Dissemination of Best Practices
  • Social Action Programme
  • Consulting in Sexual Health, Programme Management, Care and Support for People with HIV in resource poor countries
  • Information, Education and Communication (IEC)

The Centre also implements a Ford Foundation - supported Young Adult & Adolescent HIV/AIDS Education Programme.





CONSULTANTS

Dr. Suniti Solmon

Dr. Suniti Solomon, one of Asia's leading authorities on HIV and AIDS completed her MBBS from the Madras Medical College in 1965 with medals in Surgery, Medicine and Pathology. Between 1967 and 1971, she worked as a pathologist in the UK and USA. In 1972, she enrolled for an MD in Microbiology at Madras Medical College. She taught at the Institute of Microbiology at the Madras Medical College until December 1993.

She has been an academic guide for several candidates pursuing post graduate and doctoral studies. She has served on the Board of Studies and Board of Examinations of the Madras University. In 1986, she encouraged a post-graduate to undertake a surveillance on HIV/AIDS. Her team documented the first evidence of HIV infection in India. In 1986, with financial support from the Indian Council for Medical Research, she set up the first voluntary testing and counselling centre and an AIDS Resource Group in Chennai, which has served as a model since. Through the AIDS Resource Group, she began education and prevention programmes on HIV/AIDS for adolescents and young adults.

She has participated in several international conferences on HIV/AIDS and has published several papers in Indian and international journals on the epidemiological, social and clinical aspects of HIV and AIDS.

Dr. Suniti Solomon is the Chairperson of the Advisory Board of Trauma Care Consortium. She is a member of the Board of the International Family Health, India. She has travelled abroad extensively and has participated in many international conferences. Her passionate endeavour is to train and motivate young social scientists and medical personnel to carry on the battle against AIDS.
