Serum Osmolality

The Serum Osmolality test is done to determine the balance between the water and the chemical substances dissolved in the blood.

Glucose (mg/dl)
Blood Urea Nitrogen BUN (mg/dl)
Result:
Serum Osmolality (mOsm/kg)

Interpretation:

  • Normal Values:
    • 285 + or - 15 milli osmoles per kilogram(mOSm/kg)of water.
  • Lower Values could indicate :
    • low level of sodium in the blood.
    • overproduction of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) that may occur with some diseases, especially some types of lung cancer.
  • Higher Values could indicate:
    • high levels of sodium or sugar in the blood.
    • kidney disease (azotemia).
    • level of certain poisons in the blood. such as isopropanol, methanol etc.
